Creative
Arts Therapy
An Introduction
For
many people, the nature of their inner conflicts makes it extremely
difficult to communicate on a verbal level. Frequently, they can begin
to open up and express themselves only through non-verbal, non-threatening
media such as music, dance & art.
An
interest in the arts also provides important motivation toward new
learning and growth. Ex-patients and emotionally-ill individuals usually
cannot cope with regular academic demands; they require a sheltered,
non-competitive situation which affords opportunities for gratification
and success.
Creative
Arts Therapies, under medial direction, employ a highly personalized
approach that is based upon an understanding of the patient's needs
and the adaptation of methods and materials to the individual's level
of emotional and technical capacity.
The
creative process is the key element in our ability to grow and change.
Because art therapy contains the essence of this process, it provides
a natural environment for growth. Through our creativity we are able
to tap into those aspects of ourselves that enable us to transcend
difficulties.
