Teacher 2000-2001
Spectrum Center, Oakland, CA
Taught developmentally disabled, autistic and severely emotionally disturbed teens who have been removed from public schools because of their challenging behaviors. Instructed students in academics, socialization, vocational preparation and independent living. Met with families/case managers regularly to discuss their child's progress. Trained and supervised six diverse classroom staff.

  • Planned and implemented an integrated behavior management system where number of students' physical outbursts significantly decreased. Incorporated research methods, observation, assessment, clinical interventions and behavior modification. Worked closely with staff to develop strategies for serving youth with special needs.

Vocational Specialist 1998-2000
Gladman Mental Health Rehabilitation Center, Oakland, CA
Created and managed first-ever work program serving individuals with mental illness at 80-bed psychiatric facility. Developed and coordinated job placements for clients in dietary, housekeeping and administration departments. Forged community agency alliances to create volunteer opportunities for clients.

  • Increased number of clients involved in work program from 10% to 25% by planning and providing training to department directors and their staff. Taught how to supervise clients with functional impairments resulting from mental illness.

Rehabilitation Therapist/Dance Movement Therapist 1992-2000
Gladman Mental Health Rehabilitation Center, Oakland, CA
Provided counseling services to people with persistent and serious mental illness, ages 18-80. Developed assessments, formed treatment plans, worked with families to educate and provide consistent care to client, supervised a broad range of activity leaders, accessed community resources and led therapeutic groups.

  • Led dance/movement therapy and exercise groups that provided acceptance, support and social interaction. Engaged clients who were angry, isolated and exhibited strong psychotic symptoms. . Focused on memory stimulation, range of movement, relaxation, stretching and easy breathing exercises. Clients often came to group on own and were decreasingly symptomatic.
  • Facilitated community skill acquisition. Clients learned how to use public transportation, shop, manage their anxiety and anger, develop an outlet for expression, identify housing preferences and leisure plan

Teen Apprentice Program and Clown Therapy - Make*A*Circus, San Francisco, CA
Transformed two well conceived, but disorganized, programs into smooth running operations by infusing structure into them. Hired and supervised teachers, administered program budget, planned training workshops, wrote program and job descriptions, developed evaluations, edited nationally distributed training handbook and cultivated ongoing communication with local social service agencies.

  • Reaching over 500 students yearly, spearheaded outreach to diverse SF high schools and middle schools, twice a year. Interfaced with school administrators, teachers and guidance counselors to recruit at-risk youth for employment and circus arts training program.
  • Forged relationships with TV and print media to publicize programs. 3 TV segments produced and over ten articles written, including front-page SF Chronicle.

  • Led dance/movement therapy and music groups at a 40-bed acute psychiatric county hospital. Worked with adults and seniors primarily diagnosed with mood disorders, organic brain syndrome, dementia, schizophrenia and substance abuse.
